Watanabe, Seitei,- 1851-1918
Best known for his paintings of nature; prints of flowers, and birds,
kacho-e.
At sixteen he was adopted by Watanabe Koshi, and trained with the historical
genre painter, Kikuchi Yosai. He was also an industrial draftsman and
ceramics designer. Circa 1889 he began designing woodblock prints,
continuing through his lifetime, completing his third and final album two
years before his death. Seitei's designs are unique in their graceful lines,
shading and details. His compositions in the kacho-e genre were an important
influence on the early shin hanga movement, especially the technique of
utilizing negative space in pieces.

plate to create surface tone, or some may be dragged out
of the lines for further effect.
